Using tumblr is like living in a low class apartment building. You just get used to the landlord not fixing things, and then someone new moves in and you're helpfully like "oh yeah don't drink the tap water, it's got stuff in it that makes you sick" and then your neighbor you've had forever goes "oh they took the stuff out actually" and you're like "what? when was this?"

"like two years ago"

"you mean i could've been drinking the tap water all this time?"

"yeah. they gave us individual mailboxes too finally, you don't have to dig through the communal bin anymore"

"are you for real right now?? i just redirected my mail, i didnt know"

and the new tennant is like "why did you guys even live here if it was so bad"

"we like it."

"I kinda miss the communal mail bin tho"

"the perpetually naked guy got evicted though"

"i know, so sad. he was really gross"

"i mean, his cousin streaks through the commons sometimes and knocks on all the doors"

"oh yeah, hate that guy"

New Person: I just saw this weird guy in the lobby in a really creepy anthropomorphic Pikachu costume??????

Old Resident: yeah we have no idea where that guy came from. We've left messages with maintenance 'bout 'im but-

Other Old Resident: just don't make eye contact and you should be fine.

"what are these strange markings in the paint?"

"Oh! Thats from the crab infestation!"

"The crab infestation?! Wow, glad they got that under control before I moved in."

"Oh, no no, it was an intentional infestation."

"Uh...."

"Yeah, we're hoping they bring the crabs back next year. A lot of us made friends with those crabs."

Rook is such a nerd/otaku and we as a fandom don't talk about it enough. He's like an twst equivalent to a k-pop stan/kinnie. He attends every Neige event, writes comments/poetry on every one of his posts, has a thick album of every one of his pictures, and holds the second position of his fan club. His social/communication skills can be awkward ( sometimes rambling, giving nicknames sending messages through arrows, etc). And his club is the SCIENCE club.

i've been contemplating other disney villains that would make good TWST faculty because goodness knows there aren't enough & it bothers me lmao, and i have some IDEAS :3c

• hear me out: a school nurse character based on Zira from the lion king 2 who just apathetically kicks back & calls students whiners & fakers & tells them to suck it up unless Crowley or Trein are in earshot,

  • then puts on an overly attentive, almost smothering act over the tiniest thing (until the coast is clear again, then more or less drops what he's doing & walks away, sometimes actively causing injuries lmao)
  • (obviously he dotes on leona & thinks he should be successor to the throne)

• judge frollo inspired librarian who gives everyone stank eye for taking out any books that don't perfectly fit his worldview

  • (& would remove more than half the catalogue if he could get away with it)

• a clayton character who's, of all things, a geography teacher. 👀

  • this is a TERRIBLE idea.

• lefou as an assistant phys ed instructor/faculty advisor for some of the sports clubs vargas doesn't care about

• mother gothel as a charms teacher who has a weird rivalry with crewel despite technically teaching a different subject.

  • (crewel finds his apparent fixation amusing, but doesn't actually take it seriously himself)

• astronomy professor a la captain hook who's actually sebek's uncle on his mother's side

  • he's either 100% fae or half fae (but instead of disliking humans he dislikes fae? or maybe just the particular type of fae their family is, haven't decided)
  • bullies sebek mercilessly in class either way (even to the point that silver worries about him a little)

• bagheera* character as diplomacy/criminal justice/sociology professor

  • he carries the humanities dept on his back
  • between him & trein this is the most underfunded & understaffed dept
  • as he & trein are both so stern & no nonsense, their dept is unfortunately also the least popular
  • he refuses to teach animal linguistics. crowley keeps nudging him about it, but he insists it's discriminatory & that he already has too much on his plate

• shere khan character as poli sci professor

  • kaa as psych teacher
  • john silver(treasure planet) as philosophy teacher
  • these are the only other humanities teachers & it's a nightmare for bagheera & trein

i love when you’re talking to someone who’s not from florida and you just casually mention a thing that only happens in Florida and it ruins their whole day

one time i was talking to some guy and he was like “haha how do yall get alligators in your backyard? do you not have fences?” and i had to inform him that gators can absolutely climb fences

this is why kennedy space center had to install fancy outward-curving fences around the launchpad, bc gators climbing over regular fences and getting on the launchpad could be very dangerous

I’d like to think that the “STOP 🛑” sign is also for the gators.

The gators don’t abide by our petty laws. They are…instigators.

weaselle

turns out they climb trees too. Like regularly. they tend to do it a lot less once they reach certain sizes, but like several crocodilian species turn out to have a whole development period where they spend a lot of time in trees, and we just never knew that until like 2014 because, understandably, nobody who was studying them thought “i wonder if I should look for a bunch of crocodiles up in the trees”

How to Write Supporting Characters

coffeebeanwriting

Here are some tips when it comes to writing the side characters of your novel. Use a few, none, or merge a couple!

1) Have your side character bring a unique perspective to your story. Think of a side character who challenges the protagonist’s morals or brings a different view to the table.

2) Give them growth / a character arc. This doesn’t have to be as well-rounded or intricate as your main cast, but even the side characters should grow in some way during the story (this could be positive or negative) unless you plan for them to be static characters.

3) Know their backstory. Even if it’s the bare minimum, come up with the reasons why they are the way they are. What significant moment(s) in their life led them to the where they are in the story? How does it impact the way they act?

4) Subplots. Side characters and subplots go hand in hand. While your main protagonist is dealing with the main plot, it can be nice to have side characters intertwining with subplots. Of course, these plots can overlap.

5) Give them a goal. Just like your protagonist, your side characters will become more complex if given a motive or agenda. Make sure you treat them like real people who have desires. What propels them forward? What is their deepest desire? What will they do if they cannot have it? Do you give it to them or not?

6) Let them make an impact. Have their actions directly or indirectly affect the main plot and your protagonist. If the side character means something to the protagonist, they will mean something to the reader. Perhaps the side character gives your protagonist a shoulder to cry on, or a weapon that impacts the final battle.

7) Give them a theme. What lessons will this side character teach your protagonist (and thus the reader)? Take Redemption as an example: does this side character cause trouble for the protagonist the whole story, only to have a change of heart in the end?

8) Give them at least one unique quality. Something to remember them by, something that makes them easily distinguishable. A lavish accent, a brutal scar, a bad habit, an obsession with something. The list goes on and on.

9) Have something they do affect the ending. No matter how small of an impact they have on the ending, consider giving them a part of it. Did they say something to the protagonist that gave them courage in the end? Did they steal something that would’ve made the ending easier? Did they alert the bad guys of the protagonist’s incoming?

10) Give them their own special setting. We all have places we prefer hanging out: a coffee shop, a street corner, the roof of a school, the mall. Anchor some of your side characters to a specific setting, that way it helps with your worldbuilding as well. Next time your main characters pass by that specific location, the readers might think of that side character.

Bonus Tip) Allow some side characters to be forgettable. Sometimes it’s okay for a character to exist for one purpose and then never be seen again. Don’t stress yourself out trying to make all your characters serve a higher purpose, because some people only exist in our lives for a short period of time. That’s just life.
